3:30-4:30 Tuesday Session Notes: Starting From Scratch: Building School 2.0
Designing School 2.0–Science Leadership Academy (Philadelphia)
5 core values: collaboration, inquiry, research, reflection, presentation
Academic values vs. community values
How plan/design curriculum in student centered environment?
Need a goal or vision to start from, then core values become tools to attain
Needs to be dynamic, relevant, learning by doing, backward planning, involving everyone including students/teachers/administrators, authentic, interdisciplinary
They use Understanding by Design (Wiggins)
They used Moodle as their planning tool–
It’s not just the teachers–kids often make the connections. 10th grade theme is systems. 11th grade theme is change. 12th is creation
All unit plans posted online. Developing repository.
He’s not a fan of multiple choice tests. What does summative and formative assessment look like?
Assess process and product
Allows student input and self-assessment, peer assessment, teacher assessment, real-world assessment
Observations
Student reflection/developmental growth–maybe reflective electronic portfolios
Understanding, not just the right answers.
In Philadelphia there are four standardized test points each year, so they do a project based project at the end of each quarter: with rubric based on these criteria: design, knowledge, process, application and presentation
Use common rubric with modifications for class as appropriate
They have developed a common language throughout the school to talk about stuff which helps with continuity
Will do some multiple choice test practice sometimes to prepare for state tests.
End of year Expo
Authentic assessment is more expensive, takes more time–
STARS program in Nebraska–check out what is and how they do assessment to comply with NCLB
They still give quizzes and tests. In addition to their projects. It’s relative values of each.
What are necessary tech tool in this new paradigm?
the usual suspects
